Film brief: THE SKELETON TWINS

Bill Hader and Kristen Wiig (Roadside Attractions)

Craig Johnson’s The Skeleton Twins is both extraordinarily empathetic and remarkably restrained, even as its melodramatic tendencies weigh it down ever so slightly. In the hands of SNL veterans, and close friends, Kristen Wiig and Bill Hader as suicidal adult siblings struggling to reconnect and push through their pain, this slice-of-life perfects the immensely challenging balance of tragicomedy. Johnson never goes too gloomy in his depiction of suicide, but he doesn’t shy away from its core, horrifying reality: these two characters have reached a point where they are willing, even desiring, to end their lives. Wiig and Hader are inarguably the screen pairing of the year, and maybe the past few years: the history and closeness these performers share radiates, and together they convey a remarkable vulnerability and easiness with one another. They make The Skeleton Twins much more than the sum of its agreeable, albeit disparate, parts. B+
